In 1912, Japan gave a gift of 3,000 sakura trees to the United States as a symbol of our friendship between nations. Another 3,800 sakura trees were donated in 1965 and the cherry blossom trees were planted along the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. The National Cherry Blossom Festival continues to celebrate this gift and the cherry blossoms’ emergence each Spring.
