The 84th Academy Awards, in Los Angeles, showed Hollywood elite in all their glamor. Michelle Williams alone was wearing two-million dollars worth of diamond jewelry. Even if this is over your budget, there are ways to watch for trends and create your own style.
This year the overall atmosphere was one of elegant, vintage glamor with choker necklaces, drop earrings, cuffs and over-sized rings. Plenty of glam! Here’s how to create your own look.
DROP EARRINGS
Actresses such Jessica Chastain, Natalie Portman, Milla Jovovich, Angelina Jolie, Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez all wore different styles of drop earrings. Jessica wore a yellow diamond drop surround by smaller diamonds. Some earrings, such as Jennifer’s were tear-drop stone. Others, such as Angelina Jolie were cushion-cut diamonds. Explore the shape and length that is right for you. Does your dress have bare shoulders? This or a low-cut dress may be able to carry a longer earring. Ultimately, the proportions must work for you.
COLOR
Look for unique colors and stones that compliment your outfit but do not necessarily have to match. At the Academy Awards there were many beautiful combination of tones surrounding the central outfit color. Your jewelry, hair, make-up, manicure, purse and shoes should create a visual chord. For example, Milla Jovovich’s white sequin gown, diamond jewelry, silver purse and white manicure all brought the focus of attention to her vibrant red lips and smokey eyes. If your dress has a lot of details or strong features, such as Emma Stone’s large red neck bow, you may wish to keep the jewelry in a similar color. Emma wore ruby earrings that were more subtle and worked well with her vibrant red dress. A large bracelet helped to set a balance against the neck bow.
LARGE RINGS
There were many dramatic rings that added to the elegance of the evening. Emeralds and sapphires were popular colored stones but find the colors that are right for you and have fun. Victoria Beckham wore a beige dress with black belt. A black manicure helped to set off her large emerald and diamond ring. Natalie Portman was wearing a large diamond engagement and (rumored to be) wedding ring. Her black cherry manicure set off the ring, and tied together undertones from her red dress and black clutch.
